Leeds Bradford International Airport
Yeadon Aerodrome (as Leeds Bradford International Airport was then known) began operating with club flying and training flights in 1931. With the outbreak of the Second World War, all civil flying ceased. With the Avro factory adjacent, many of the 4,500 aircraft built by Avro during the war, including the legendary Lancaster heavy bomber made their first flights from Yeadon. Civil flights resumed in 1947. The newly formed Leeds Bradford Airport Joint Committee took control of the Airport in 1959; improvements to facilities soon followed including the installation of permanent airfield lighting. In the following year, the first daily flights to London commenced and in 1965 a new runway became operational. Unfortunately there was also a major fire in the terminal building in 1965, so construction of a replacement began later in the year, which was opened in February 1968.
Major construction work took place again in 1982 to substantially improve the terminal facilities, extend the main runway by 2250 metres and improve and divert a local road under the runway. Rapid growth followed and by 1986 half a million passengers had passed through the airport. Since then the terminal building has virtually doubled in size, passenger figures rising to 1 million in 1996.
In 2001 just over 1.5 million passengers used the airport. In 2002 Leeds Bradford became the first airport to be awarded the Green Globe Certificate for Environmental Management; a programme specifically developed for the Travel & Tourism Industry. In July 2003 new £5 million catering facilities were opened and June 2004 saw the commissioning of brand new check-in facilities. With the annual passenger figures for 2003 hitting the 2 million mark it is clear that Leeds Bradford Airport continues to expand and develop.

Business Facilities
Servisair's Executive Lounge is situated on the first floor of the Departure Lounge and was fully refurbished and re-opened in January 2004. Facilities include internet docking and work stations and the entire area is covered by a WiFi network. Complimentary newspapers, unlimited freshly brewed tea and coffee, a well stocked free bar, toast making facilities and light snacks are all available together with telephones, fax machine and laptop power points. Leeds Bradford International Airport also provides a wireless internet facility, 'Wi-Fi', in the departure lounge allowing users to access the Internet without the need for cables and without the hassle of changing settings on their laptop or PDA.
For passengers requiring an overnight stop at Leeds Bradford there are several suitable hotels situated nearby including the 3 star Chevin Country Park Hotel, situated in 50 acres of private woodland yet only 2 miles from the airport and the Ramada Leeds Parkway Hotel on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales.
