The History of Doncaster Airport
Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield is built on the site of a former Royal Air Force airbase, RAF Finningley. The scheme to convert the base into a commercial airport received massive support from local residents, the business community and the wider aviation industry that appreciated that there was a need for further aviation services within the Yorkshire, Humber and surrounding regions.
RAF Finningley opened in 1936 and was best known as the front line Bomber Command base during World War II and the Cold War. The base was also famous for its military aircraft displays. The runway is just less than 2 miles long and was resurfaced in 1989 before the Ministry of Defence declared the site surplus to requirements in March 1995.
In June 1999 Peel Holdings purchased the site with the view to turning it into a commercial airport. Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield commenced commercial operations on 28th April 2005. In 2007 the airport handled over 1 million passengers for the first time ever, ranking i the 22nd busiest airport in the UK.
