About Humberside Airport

Humberside Airport (HUY) is the UK's 28th busiest airport in terms of numbers of passengers. It is located at Kirmington in North Lincolnshire, 12 miles west of Grimsby and about 15 miles from Kingston Upon Hull.

In 2011, Humberside Airport handled more than 270,000 passengers, which was more than a 3% decrease from the previous year.

Passenger numbers at the airport peaked in the early to mid-2000s when the facility was used by around 500,000 passengers per year. Cargo throughput at Humberside, however, reached record levels in 2011 at over 1,100 tonnes, around 10 times the level seen in 2005.

HUY offers scheduled flights to Aberdeen and Amsterdam as well as holiday flights to Bulgaria; Crete; Jersey; Majorca and Turkey.

The History of Humberside Airport

Humberside Airport was previously a Royal Air Force base, RAF Kirmington, which opened in 1941 during World War II. The site was abandoned after the war in 1945, and lay unused until the 20th March 1974 when the local council re-opened the site as Kirmington Airport. However just six days later the local area was renamed Humberside following a local government re-organisation in England, and the name was changed to Humberside Airport.

By the mid 1980's, 100,000 passengers were using the airport each year. In 1986, the airport became a private limited company owned by Humberside County Council. A runway extension is approved and completed in 1992 taking the runway length to 2200 metres. In June 1999, Manchester Airport plc buys an 82.7% share of the airport.

The new millennium sees increased passenger growth at Humberside with over 450,000 passengers using the airport in 2000. More services were added and in 2003 a major expansion of airport leisure facilities is unveiled, including a larger restaurant, a new pub and viewing conservatory. In March of that year Humberside Airport breaks the 500,000 passenger mark for the first time in its 29-year history.
