Edinburgh Airport
Opened by her Majesty the Queen in 1977, Edinburgh Airport was built on the site of Turnhouse Aerodrome, originally established for the Royal Flying Corps in 1915 and later to become RAF Turnhouse. In 1960 the Ministry of Aviation took the airport over from the Ministry of Defence and in 1971 Edinburgh Airport was taken over by BAA plc (formerly the British Airports Authority).
A major expansion project was begun, the first phase of which was completed in 1999. It included numerous terminal facilities and an expansion of the number of parking spaces for aircraft. A major terminal upgrade was also opened in April 2001. In 1999 more than five million passengers passed through Edinburgh Airport, a figure that rose to 6.9 million in 2002. With more construction work planned, including a new Air Traffic control tower, Edinburgh Airport will continue to expand, bringing with it increased numbers of passengers.
Business Facilities
British Airways, British Midland and Servisair all have executive lounges at Edinburgh Airport with telephone, fax, photocopier and Internet access. Complimentary refreshments, newspapers and magazines are also available together with television facilities. If an overnight stay is required there are a number of hotels to choose from. The main hotel on site is the 4 star Edinburgh Airport Hilton, a modern luxury hotel within reasonable walking distance of the terminal with facilities including a swimming pool, gymnasium, steam room and sauna and a choice of bars and restaurants. Other nearby hotels operate regular shuttle services to Edinburgh Airport including the Maybury Hotel, the 3 star Quality Hotel and the 4 star Edinburgh Marriott.
