Liverpool Airport
Being officially opened on 1st July 1933, 3 years after scheduled
flights commenced Liverpool is one of the UK's oldest operational
airports. In the late 1930s a dedicated passenger terminal and aircraft
hangar were built. During the Second World War the grass landing strips
were replaced with concrete runways to allow for larger and heavier
aircraft to use the airfield. In 1961 control of the airport was transferred
from the Ministry of Aviation to the local authority and in 1966 a
new runway was opened on land adjacent to the original airport. This
allowed Liverpool Airport to operate 24 hours a day.
A new passenger terminal was opened in 1986 and in 1990 Liverpool
Airport became privately owned with British Aerospace being the majority
shareholder. This resulted in a major investment programme during
the mid 1990s, during which the terminal was expanded providing new
passenger lounges and a larger arrivals hall. The airport again changed
ownership in 1997 with Peel Holdings plc acquiring British Aerospace's
shareholding, in 2001 they became the sole owners. Passenger numbers
have dramatically increased recently with over 2.8 million passengers
using Liverpool in 2002 and 3.2 million in 2003.
In July 2001 Yoko Ono visited the airport to announce the renaming
to Liverpool John Lennon Airport in honour of her late husband; a
process which was completed in March 2002 when she returned to jointly
unveil a 7ft bronze statue of him, making Liverpool the first airport
in the UK to be named after an individual.
In May 2002 a new air traffic control facility was opened and two
months later HRH Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the new expanded
terminal building increasing capacity to 3 million annual passengers
and providing a new check-in hall, additional food and retail areas
and new departures and arrivals areas. The Secretary of State for
Transport, Alistair Darling MP, continuing the airport's expansion
and development and further increasing its passenger capacity, opened
another new departure extension in May 2004.
Business Facilities
The Halewood International Business Lounge is open to all passengers
on payment of an admission fee although members of certain flight
clubs are admitted free of charge. It provides a relaxed and exclusive
atmosphere including complimentary newspapers and refreshments. There
is also an internet area with office type desks and chairs, laptop
connections and payphone facilities.
For internet and email facilitites a coin and credit card operated
machine is located near the W H Smith shop in the Arrivals area on
Level 1 and three workstations are also located in the Departure Lounge.
Liverpool Airport also has conference facilities in ther form of The
Cavern Suite which is available for hire for meetings and can handle
up to 25 delegates board style and up to 80 theatre style.
For passengers requiring an overnight stay near Liverpool Airport
the 4 star Liverpool Marriott Hotel South is a conversion of the old
terminal building and is located about a mile from the present terminal.
Guests have complimentary use of the David Lloyd Sports and Leisure
Centre (a converted hangar) next to the hotel and a shuttle vehicle
operates between the airport and the hotel. In addition there are
many other suitable hotels in all price brackets situated in Liverpool,
Chester and the surrounding areas, all just a short distance from
the airport. |
