East Midlands Airport - Airport information and Business facilities

Airport information East Midlands Airport East Midlands Airport was opened to the public on 2nd April 1965. It took over from Burnaston airport, which only had a grass runway. The freight traffic quickly rose resulting in the creation of a new complex and the extension of the terminal and both runways. In the late 1970s the main runway was extended and terminal building upgraded. In 1985 a million passengers passed through the airport for the first time necessitating another terminal extension, which was opened in 1986.
In 1993 East Midlands Airport became the first major regional airport to be privately owned when the National Express Group purchased it. They invested heavily in the airport completing another runway extension that allowed the airport to be used for long-haul flights They also built the second highest air traffic control tower in the country! In 2001 East Midlands Airport was sold to the Manchester Airport Group and passenger figures rose to 2.38 million and in 2002 to 3.2 million. In addition to it being a primary hub for Royal Mail, the airport's excellent location in the centre of the country has also contributed to its successful cargo and freight operations; DHL, TNT and UPS all having bases there.
Business facilities Fax and photocopying services are available for a small charge at the airport information desk and two dedicated lounges, the bmi british midland Euroclass Lounge and the bmi british midland Diamond Club Lounge allow passengers to relax in comfortable surroundings and take advantage of a wide range of refreshments or use the extensive business facilities available.
If an overnight stay is required there are many hotels within a short distance from East Midlands Airport but two of the nearest are the Express by Holiday Inn which is adjacent to the airport terminal and the 164 room, 4 star Thistle Hotel with its swimming pool, gymnasium and full leisure facilities, also within walking distance of the airport terminal.
