Gatwick Airport - Airport information and Business facilities
Gatwick Airport stands on the site of the original Surrey Aero
Club. Founded in 1930, by the following year it was becoming increasingly
popular with jockeys and race goers arriving for meetings at the
adjacent racecourse. Following several ownership changes in the
early 1930's, the Air Ministry issued Gatwick with its first public
licence, allowing it to be used by commercial aircraft. An airport
terminal was officially opened in 1936; called The Beehive, it
was the world's first circular terminal and included a 130-yard
long subway to the train station to keep passengers undercover.
Flights began in May 1936 but were interrupted during the Second
World War when the airport became an operational RAF airfield.
In 1952, the Government gave approval for the development of Gatwick
as an alternative to Heathrow and building began in March 1956.
Her Majesty The Queen officially opened Gatwick Airport on 9 June
1958, less than three years later and at a cost of £7.8
million.
In 1962 work began to double the size of the terminal. In 1964
the runway was extended again. During 1968 passenger figures exceeded
2 million for the first time; more runway extensions followed
in 1970 and 1973.
In 1984 a new Air Traffic Control Tower, still among the tallest
in Europe, was opened by Princess Michael of Kent.
In 1985, construction began on the new northern runway, which
would be used as alternative to the main runway in case of emergencies.
A complete modernisation-building programme was finished in 1985
to refurbish pier 1, the only part of the present day South Terminal
that dates from the original building of 1958.
Then in 1988, following a five year construction period, the £200
million North Terminal, the main building of which is approximately
six times larger than the Royal Albert Hall, was officially opened
by Her Majesty The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh. Further construction
work has taken place in recent years to build and extend International
Departure Lounges in the North and South Terminals, all of which
has resulted in Gatwick being the second largest airport in the
UK, the sixth busiest international airport in the world and the
busiest single runway airport in the world with around 30 million
passengers a year being handled, forecast to rise to around 40
million by 2010/11.
There are two executive lounges available in the South Terminal,
the Servisair Lounge on the upper level of the international departures
lounge and the Aviance Lounge, The Sir Robert Hardingham Suite,
located on the second level of the South Terminal. A second Aviance
business lounge, The Alexandra Suite, is located in the North
Terminal departures lounge. All these lounges offer similar facilities
providing a tranquil haven where visitors can prepare for important
business meetings or simply relax with complimentary drinks and
snacks, newspapers and magazines. Showers are also available.
Wireless broadband internet access is available in the departure
lounges of the North and South Terminals and a 24 hour internet
cafe, the Internet Exchange, is located in the South Terminal
offering internet access, Microsoft 2000, email, gaming facilities
and computer training using dedicated pc terminals in a cafe environment.
This service also allows you to set up an email address and attach
and send documents up to two megabytes in size. Gatwick Airport
also houses the BAA Conference and Business Centre at the South
Terminal which provides conference and meeting facilities, videoconferencing, board rooms, training rooms and internet access.
For travellers requiring an overnight stop, the 4 star Le Meridien
London Gatwick Hotel is connected to Gatwick Airport's North Terminal
via a covered walkway and the 4 star Renaissance Gatwick Hotel,
popular with business travellers, is adjacent to the airport.
In addition there are many other hotels to be found in the surrounding
areas of Horley and Crawley.
