Heathrow Airport started life as the Great Western Aerodrome, a
small privately owned grass airfield, used largely for test flying.
Commercial flights were made from nearby Heston and Hanworth Park.
In 1944 work started on developing it as a major transport base
for the RAF. When the war ended it became the ideal site for a large
London airport since it was already partly developed. In 1946, with
one runway completed, it was taken over by the Ministry of Civil
Aviation who erected an army surplus tent a short walk from the
aircraft; this passed as a terminal!
By 1947 three runways were complete and another three were being
built (although these were later abandoned as being unnecessary)
and in the early 1950s the terminal tent was replaced by a permanent
building.
As passenger numbers increased, airport expansion followed; the
new Terminal 2 building was opened by HRH Queen Elizabeth II in
1955, followed by the Oceanic terminal for long-haul carriers (now
known as Terminal 3) in 1961. In May 1969 Terminal 1 was officially
opened, again by the Queen.
Finally, in 1986, a fourth terminal (Terminal 4) was added on the
south side of the airport to reduce congestion in the central area
which inevitably means that it is a 10-20 minute transfer from the
heart of Heathrow.
Today London Heathrow is the UK's largest airport, the busiest international
airport in the world and the second busiest cargo port with around
63 million passengers being handled in the year ending 2003 and
an average of 1,250 flights per day passing through the airport.
The Travelex Business Centre is situated in the Queens Building
between Terminals 1 and 2 of Heathrow Airport. Facilities available
here include showers, 20 meeting rooms, conference suite seating
up to 60 people and business support facilities including access
to two computer workstations, faxing, photocopying, internet,
email, audio and video conferencing. The individual membership
package provides free access to The Centre's business lounge where
drinks and light snacks are available, discounts for meeting room
hire and complimentary use of the showers.
There are also 3 Executive Lounges at Heathrow run by Servisair,
located in Terminals 1, 2 and 3. For a single payment, these offer
a wide range of complimentary beverages and snacks besides work
areas equipped with phone, fax and e mail connections. Customers
can also take advantage of a selection of newspapers and magazines,
television, internet and toilet and shower facilities.
Wireless internet access is available in the departure lounges
of terminals 1, 3 and 4 and webpoints are also available at terminal
4. There are also a number of internet cafes at the airport.
For business executives who need to make an overnight stay there
are a number of hotels less than 2 miles from the airport, ranging
from the 5 star luxury of the Radisson Edwardian Heathrow to the
2 star Ibis London Heathrow Airport. The hotels immediately surrounding
Heathrow are served by a shuttle bus called Hotel Hoppa.
