Manchester Airport - Airport information and Business facilities
Manchester Airport -
The history of Manchester Airport in its present location
dates back to 1938. Before then, in 1929 Wythenshawe Airport
was opened as a temporary airfield and Barton Aerodrome near
Eccles in 1930. By 1934 it became clear that Barton was not
suitable for larger aircraft; modifications were considered
to be too expensive so the current site at Ringway, South
of Manchester, was chosen. Ringway Airport was officially
opened on the 25th June 1938 but was closed to civil traffic
again during the WWII when it became an aircraft manufacturing
centre and home to over 60,000 trainee parachutists. Normal
passenger services resumed in 1946 and the airport quickly
grew with extended terminal facilities being opened in 1949,
the main runway being extended in 1951.
In 1962 Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh opened a £2.7
million terminal, the first in Europe to use the pier system
where passengers remain under cover as they board the aircraft.
Another runway extension followed in 1969 to accommodate non-stop
flights to Canada. In 1974 a new inter-continental pier was
opened featuring many innovations including air bridges to
connect passengers direct to the aircraft for the first time.
This new facility allowed Boeing 747s to fly in and out of
Manchester and by 1980, passengers topped more than half a
million in one month. A further runway extension followed
and in 1987 throughput had increased to one million passengers
in a month.
In 1989 the Princess of Wales opened a new domestic terminal
and in 1993 Terminal 2 was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh,
resulting in passenger numbers increasing to reach 15 million
per year by 1995.
In 1997 work began on the construction of a second runway,
which was opened in February 2001. Also in 2001, Manchester
Airport became the second largest airport operator in the
UK when it purchased East Midlands Airport and Bournemouth
Airport.
In 2004 the airport achieved an annual passenger throughput
of 20 million making Manchester Airport one of Britain's,
and the world's principal airports.
Manchester Airport offers many facilities for business passengers
including a dedicated Business Centre located at Terminal
3 providing private workstations with telephone, fax, photocopying, word processing facilities, meeting room hire, message-taking
service, internet access and video conferencing. Other facilities offered by the airport are wireless internet access also
in Terminal 3, conference and banqueting facilities for
up to 400 people, executive lounges situated in all terminals
and fax facilities at information desks in all terminals.
Manchester Airport also offers a choice of 6 on-site hotels
ranging from the 3 star, 226 room, Bewleys Hotel, just 3
minutes walk from terminal 1 or 3, to the 5 star Radisson
SAS Hotel which is directly linked to the airport's elevated
passenger walkway.
