Durham Tees Valley Airport - Airport information and Business facilities
Teesside Airport -
In 1941, on the site of Teesside International Airport was Royal Air
Force Station Middleton-St-George. It was the base for several bomber
squadrons including many from the Royal Canadian Air Force. After
the war it became the home of advanced flying training and squadrons
of Fighter Command and was designated as an RAF Master Diversion Aerodrome.
After the RAF departed in 1964, following extensive development work
including the construction of a passenger terminal, improvements to
the apron and the conversion of the officer's mess into the St George
Airport Hotel the site became Teesside Airport. Queen Margaritha of
Sweden opened the terminal in 1966 and in 1986 the domestic baggage
hall was extended and a Duty Free shop opened.
In 1987 the airport was privatised, becoming Teesside International
Airport and 1990 saw the 1 millionth aircraft movement. After a rough
period that affected aviation worldwide due to the Gulf War and civil
unrest in Yugoslavia, Teesside announced a £6 million investment
programme in 1994. Runway refurbishment was completed in 1995, in
1996 a new radar system was installed and a new international arrivals
area was opened together with two new lounges. 1996 also saw the arrival
of the world's largest aircraft, an Antonov 124 Condor, from Houston,
Texas.
Annual passenger figures of half a million were being achieved by
1997 and since then a number of further developments have helped to
fuel the airport's expansion including an extension to the International
Departure Lounge, the final phase of the terminal extension programme
and an extension to the apron to enable better aircraft handling.
In 2003 bmibaby made Teesside International Airport their 4th UK base
further raising the airport's profile and passenger numbers had increased
to almost 750,000 at year-end in 2004.
The airport has two executive lounges the bmi business lounge and
the diamond class lounge with entry to both depending upon passenger
and ticket type. In addition, facsimile, photocopier and telephone
facilities are available for business use operated through the Airport
Information Desk. For executives requiring overnight the airport offers
the St George Hotel and the Spa Hotel.
