Newcastle Airport - Airport information and Business facilities
Newcastle International Airport was opened on 26th July 1935. It cost
just £35,000 and consisted of a grass runway, a clubhouse, a
hangar, workshops, an ambulance room, a hose for petrol and a garage.
The first scheduled service that called here flew between Croydon
and Perth. Scotland, and was operated by North Eastern Airways using
Rapide and 8 seater Airspeed Envoy aircraft.
In the 1950s an ex-RAF fighter pilot, Jim Denyer, was appointed
Airport Manager and determined to put Newcastle Airport firmly on
the map. With the birth of the "package holiday" people
were able to travel to such exotic destinations as the Isle of Man,
the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands, raising the airport passenger
throughput to 5,500 per year.
With the 1960s came a boom in travel to "sunshine" destinations,
especially Spain. To cope with the increasing numbers of passengers
a new runway, apron and control building were constructed. By the
1970s passenger figures had soared to 700,000 and in 1978 it officially
became a regional international airport.
The 1980s saw £8 million spent on developments including improved
check-ins, lounges, catering and duty free facilities, and by the
1990s passenger figures had reached 1.67 million per year. Again
development followed with an extended and improved terminal building
being opened by the Princess Royal in 1994 and a £27 million
terminal extension being completed in January 2000.
In 2003 passenger figures once again reached record-breaking levels
at 3.8 million and with continued growth and investment it aims
to become one of the most innovative and successful UK airports.
For the business traveller Newcastle International Airport has the
Cheviot Executive Lounge, located in the departure lounge. Here
complimentary drinks and snacks are available together with credit
card operated telephone, fax and internet facilities. Complimentary
entry can be gained with certain qualifying cards. There is also
the British Airways Lounge, open to certain passengers including
all BA full-fare ticket holders where there is a coffee bar facility
offering light snacks and wines and a business centre area with
internet access, telephone and fax.
For any travellers requiring an overnight stop, there is the 3 star
Britannia Hotel located on the airport site, a Travel Inn &
Aviator Beefeater 500 metres from the airport and Premier Lodge
located approximately 1/3 mile from the airport.
