Birmingham airport monorail plans in development

Tue, 20 Jan, 2009

A multi-million plan for a monorail service for Birmingham International Airport is being devised, it has been reported.

The service, which could carry passengers from New Street Station to the airport in 16 minutes, may be able to take a capacity of 35,000 people an hour, the Birmingham Post reports.

In all, the scheme, which is being proposed by Birmingham Business Focus, would cost £280 million.

It is being developed as a solution to traffic problems in the city, which would also be relevant to airport parking.

According to train construction firm Metrail AG and engineering consultancy Arup, the monorail would be a tourist attraction and be a greener alternative to a train or tram.

Airport parking is available at Birmingham International Airport and travellers can make savings by booking in advance.

Discounts can be as high as 60 per cent compared to the rates charged when drivers simply turn up.
