British airports 'could expect more Iceland-bound passengers'
Thu, 04 Jun, 2009
UK airports could be set to see an increase in numbers of passengers heading to Iceland, if one expert is to be believed.
Travel association Abta said customers no longer see the northern European destination as an expensive choice.
Problems with finance in the country particularly its banks mean it is now a cheaper place to head for a holiday, the board remarked.
It noted an overall trend in recent years for vacationers heading to countries hit by economic crises.
Argentina, Cambodia and Thailand were cited as examples of places where better exchange rates and value for money have been found.
A spokesperson for the organisation explained: "Iceland's financial difficulties probably have helped to improve it as a tourist destination. Prices certainly have become cheaper in terms of drinks and living."
Her comments follow a report by Icelandic firm Eye that found 55 per cent of Brits associate nature with the chilly country.
Those heading away on a bargain break could save further money by choosing to take advantage of airport parking options rather than having a stay in a hotel or using public transport.
