Air Passenger Duty will cost holidaymakers
Thu, 06 Aug, 2009
The government is intending to raise Air Passenger Duty to the extent that a family of four will be due to pay £180 in tax on a flight to Florida, according to ABTA.
This figure could rise to £240 in 2010 and the travel association is now urging families to write to their local MPs to protest the changes.
One expert believes that the tax will place an extra financial burden on families planning to fly abroad this year.
Lorna Cowen, editor at Which? Holiday, said: "I don't think it will restrict people but it certainly will push the holiday budget if they are spending a significant amount especially when you think about a family of five and perhaps they are going quite long haul."
According to recent data released by Holiday-Rentals.co.uk the average family in the UK will spend £2,092 on their holiday in 2009, £259 less that in 2007.
