Airports likely to benefit from travel sector optimism

Fri, 18 Sep, 2009

More people are expected to fly from UK airports next summer as the travel industry becomes more optimistic.

This is according to ABTA - The Travel Association, which said that bookings for holidays in 2010's summer months were "looking good at this stage".

ABTA spokeswoman Francis Tuke said there was "cautious optimism" in the travel sector, with many people expected to book flights abroad next summer after experiencing a drizzly 'staycation' in 2009.

"There are some very good areas of growth, places outside the EU like Turkey and Egypt and this summer other places like Cyprus and Tunisia have been doing well and growing quite nicely," she commented.

Ms Tuke went on to say that, despite the fact that business is down, the level of decline is not "too bad" when compared to other sectors.

Figures published by the Office for National Statistics this week revealed that visits abroad by UK residents fell by one per cent between May and July this year compared to the previous three months.
