Heathrow Airport reports busiest month ever

Wed, 11 Aug, 2010

The operator of London's Heathrow Airport BAA has reported figures indicating July was its busiest month ever.

July saw 6.7 million people making journeys through the airport, a 3.5 per cent increase on last year.

The airport also saw its busiest ever day on Sunday July 18th with over 230,000 passengers passing through its gates.

BAA also reported a slight traffic increase of 0.3 per cent across all its UK airports, rising to 10.9 million passengers in July.

The company named its fastest growing market for July as Europe, which saw an increase in traffic of just under three per cent. Long-haul traffic saw a rise of 0.5 per cent, with domestic traffic 4.6 per cent lower than last year.

While Heathrow Airport's traffic rose, the total number of air transport movements for BAA's UK airports saw a decrease of 0.4 per cent when compared with the same period last year.

The news comes in the wake of BAA announcing the sale of its US retail contracts earlier in the month. The company claimed this was part of an ongoing strategy to divest their non-core assets.
