Manchester Airport gets tram link go-ahead

Wed, 11 Aug, 2010

Manchester Airport is set to gain a tram link following the approval by Greater Manchester's city leaders of 500 million for funding extensions.

Besides the airport link, two new additions to the city's tram lines have been announced and passengers will be able to travel directly to Oldham and Rochdale via the service.

The links to Rochdale and Oldham are due to be completed in 2014, with the airport link arriving by 2016.

Spokesman for The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities Lord Peter Smith said that the schemes were prioritised based on how much they would contribute to the regional economy.

He said: "Public transport has a crucial part to play in supporting Greater Manchester's economy and these Metrolink extensions will give a huge boost to the region."

Last week also saw Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive appoint MPact-Thales as the contractor for the design and construction of the new tram lines.
