Japanese researchers find secret formula for cheap flights

Mon, 23 Aug, 2010

Whether to bookflights early or late has long been a dilemma for travellers. However, economists from Japan have found the optimal time to buy an airline ticket.

The findings of a new study published in the Economic Journal into the best times to book flights have resulted in the creation of an equation which indicates around eight weeks beforehand is the best time to secure a ticket.

Researchers found that booking over eight weeks in advance could mean a rise in costs if flight plans are altered. However, booking later increases the risk of higher prices.

According to the research team: "When we book our flight to London weeks ahead we have to account for the possibility of unforeseen events which make our trip to London impossible."

These results come after an announcement earlier in the month, which revealed massive holiday price cuts after First Choice and Thomson recuperated losses for the difficulty they faced during the volcanic ash crisis.
