Dubai Airport sees rise in high-value sales

Tue, 31 Aug, 2010

A Dubai Airport store owner has reported a rise in the number of high-value items being sold in his boutiques.

After one customer spent upwards of $100,000 (£64,000) on eight bottles of wine at an airport store, the shop claimed this marked an increase in the sale of high-value items.

This purchase almost doubled the world record for duty-free wine sales and occurred in a single visit to the Le Clos fine wine boutique in the airport's Terminal 3.

The sale, which included Chateau Petrus' from 1947 and 1961, was welcomed by the stores' owners which stated that it signals continued demand for high-end wines.

Chief executive of Le Clos's owner Maritime and Mercantile International Andrew Day claimed the purchase marked a trend and told Decanter magazine: "We've seen a noticeable increase in customers purchasing high-value items for gifting, but also for personal consumption or to diversify their investment portfolios."

This announcement follows news of research by Currencies.co.uk which revealed British holidaymakers in the eurozone would see an additional £766 million of spending money this year.
