Birmingham Airport 'fully committed' to environment
Fri, 03 Sep, 2010
Birmingham Airport has announced that its measures to improve its environmental initiatives have resulted in a massive reduction of over 13,000 tonnes of C02 during the past year.
Spokesman for air traffic controller NATS Paul Waite expressed his approval of the airport's Continuous Descent Approach (CDA) scheme, which reduces the amount of power aircrafts need to use when descending.
"It is evident that NATS, Birmingham Airport and the airlines are fully committed to tackling local aviation environmental issues," he said.
Combating noise pollution is also a top priority for the airport and it is listed as the public's number one issue when they contact its environmental helpline.
As a result of its work with CDAs, the airport stated that it saves approximately 315kg of C02 on each flight. It also said that 95 per cent of all aircraft arriving in Birmingham are now using the method.
Birmingham Airport's work with CDAs is one of the many issues it is tackling as part of its "Sustainable Aviation" programme.
