Halal meals for BA passengers 'increase cost effectiveness'
Mon, 13 Sep, 2010
Passengers with British Airways could soon be offered halal-only in-flight meals under a scheme being considered by airline food provider GateGourmet.
Chief executive of Gategroup, of which GateGourmet is a member, Guy Dubois claimed the proposal would work to save money.
"My aim is to make our large hub operations halal compliant. If I produce everything according to halal standards, I will reduce complexity and increase cost effectiveness," he said.
Reports that halal is Arabic for permitted or lawful and refers to foods which are allowed under rules set out in the Qur'an. Under the rules of halal, Muslims are not permitted to eat pork or animals that were not slaughtered in the correct manner.
Head of Gategroup's operations in the UK Peter van Niekerk went on to say that the transition to a halal-only menu would only happen after an extended consultation with British Airways.
However, a BA spokesman told The Christian Institute that the airline currently has no plans to alter its menus.
