Glasgow Airport gains low-cost carrier base
Wed, 15 Sep, 2010
Glasgow Airport has been announced as the site of a new base for low-cost airline Jet2.com.
The announcement marks the carrier's eighth base and will bring "substantial" investment to the region. The base will also create 150 new jobs for the area, while the carrier is to offer flights to nine new low-cost destinations.
"Since its inception in early 2003, to date [the airline has served] a total of 20 million people and 50 destinations across Europe and as far afield as New York," said Jet2.com.
Earlier in the year, Icelandair announced that it would be increasing the number of weekly flights to Iceland which it provided for Glasgow Airport.
Managing director for the airport Amanda McMillain welcomed the news, claiming it was a "major boost" for the economy of west Scotland.
She went on to thank local councillors and business support groups for their effort in delivering the "exciting new venture" to the airport.
