Boeing offers commercial spaceflight

Thu, 16 Sep, 2010

People could soon be jetting off to space from British airports after aviation company Boeing revealed its intention to offer commercial spaceflight opportunities, in conjunction with Space Adventures.

General manager of Boeing's Space Exploration division Brewster Shaw said that he hoped the combination could offer affordable and safe commercial spaceflight for its customers.

"This agreement will be in concert with the NASA administrator's stated intent to promote space commerce in low Earth orbit," he said.

Although prices have not yet been set for commercial spaceflight trips, the companies state that costs will be revealed once development has commenced.

The announcement comes in the wake of news from the European Space Agency which revealed it was continuing with plans to send an unmanned lander to the surface of the Moon.

Co-founder of Space Adventures Eric Anderson expressed his view that the two companies would work to make the resources of space available to the commercial sector by "bringing the value" of space back to Earth.
