Birmingham Airport welcomes runway extension news

Fri, 17 Sep, 2010

Regional business leaders have responded positively to the news of imminent approval for Birmingham Airport's runway extension.

The Birmingham Post reports that chief executive of Birmingham and Solihull Chamber of Commerce and Industry Jerry Blackett welcomed the move as a way to boost the city's reputation as a "global player", claiming the extension had always been high on the agenda for his organisation.

"The fact that you can't fly to the fastest growing economies of the world from Birmingham has become a daily issue for business," he said.

Mr Blackett went on to state that the unfinished extension was one of the largest hindrances to Birmingham's position as an important international city.

His comments come after the Travel Guide revealed that Birmingham Airport was undergoing a significant rebranding scheme and dropping the word "International" from its title.

Chief executive of the NEC Group Paul Thandi also welcomed the news, claiming the extension would provide Birmingham with much-needed "authentic international status".
