London's Heathrow Airport saw off the first of England's Commonwealth Games athletes as they departed for Delhi last week.

Aboard the Air India flight to the host city were members of the men's hockey and lawn bowls teams who were bid a fond farewell over Terminal 3's public address system.

Lawn bowls team member Natalie Melmore of Newton Abbot expressed her excitement about the chance to participate and her appreciation of the airport.

"I'm really pleased to be flying out of Heathrow, it's the country's main airport. The service here is always great, there's a good selection of cafes," she said.

Heathrow Airport is the UK's only airport which provides direct flights to the host city of Delhi and also boasts a number of other Indian destinations including Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

Earlier in the month, Heathrow Airport received a prestigious Carbon Trust award, following its efforts to improve its carbon efficiency.
