New trams to link Birmingham Airport with city

Thu, 11 Nov, 2010

Trams could be introduced to link Birmingham Airport with the West Midlands city, it has been revealed.

Today (November 11th 2010), plans were released which showed that a network of trams could be introduced to Birmingham over the next five years.

One of these will enable air passengers to access Birmingham Airport more easily by linking the travel hub with the city centre.

The system, to be called the Birmingham Sprint, will run on wheels, unlike conventional trams, but will have their own lanes and priority at traffic lights.

As well as linking travellers to Birmingham Airport, they will also provide access to the Bullring, Paradise Circus and Broad Street.

The Vision for Movement plans will be revealed at an International Convention Centre meeting later today.

There could be greater requirement for the city to have a quick transport link to Birmingham Airport following the travel hub's plans to attract more passengers by rebranding itself, revealed last week.
