BAA launches snow resilience investigation
Wed, 29 Dec, 2010
UK airport operator BAA has launched an inquiry into the performance of London's Heathrow Airport during the recent cold snap.
Chief executive of the organisation Colin Matthews has requested that the company's non-executive director Professor David Begg head the investigation, which will examine a number of issues.
"The inquiry will forensically examine what went wrong at Heathrow, and look fundamentally at our ability to prepare and respond more effectively to periods of bad weather," he said.
BAA chairman Nigel Rudd claimed the investigation is a "powerful statement" of the company's intention to react quickly to the recent problems and pledged the full resources of the organisation to the inquiry team.
However, some UK airports were largely unaffected by the recent spate of cold weather.
Manchester Airport reported that its £2 million investment in new equipment to tackle snow had been worthwhile, with the facility remaining fully operational throughout the cold snap.
