Plymouth 'needs a bigger airport'
Mon, 17 Jan, 2011
The city of Plymouth needs to expand its current airport facilities, according to one local business figure.
David Partlby, chief executive of the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce, recently told the Herald that a number of companies in the area would welcome an enhanced aviation centre.
However, he noted that the current airport is of a lower standard than most regional facilities and pointed to its short runway, which afflicts constraints on the types of aircraft that can fly from there and the kinds of services airlines can offer.
"While the principle that Plymouth should have an airport is sound, a number of awkward factors combine which make it a very difficult proposition to run in practice," Mr Partlby said.
He added that increased investment in the region's aviation could make a "great difference" in enabling airlines to run more routes and services, in addition to boosting the city's economy.
This comes after the publication noted that locals have voiced overwhelming support for the existence of an airport in Plymouth.
