Birmingham Airport
Owned and operated by Birmingham City Council, Birmingham Airport
was opened at Elmdon on 8th July 1939. At the outbreak of the WWII
the Air Ministry requisitioned the airport. Still under government
control, it re-opened for civil flying in July 1946. The City of
Birmingham took over responsibility again in 1960 followed in April
1974 by the new West Midlands Metropolitan County Council. The terminal
and runway were expanded to cater for the growing international
market, but it soon became apparent that a long-term solution was
needed. In the late 1970s the National Exhibition Centre was opened
just minutes away from the airport further increasing its profile
and importance. In May 1984 HRH Queen Elizabeth II opened the Main
Terminal, with a capacity for 3 million passengers.
Ownership of Birmingham Airport changed again in 1986 then on 1st
April 1987 Birmingham International Airport plc took control. A
second terminal, the Eurohub, was opened in July 1991. This was
the first terminal in the world to combine domestic and international
passengers. Birmingham is now the UKs fifth largest airport; in
2003 it handled 9 million passengers with record passenger numbers
being achieved in all twelve months.
Business Facilities
Birmingham International Airport won the title of 'Best Business
Terminus' for the fifth time in nine years at the 1993 Business
Travel World magazine awards in London. The airport has several
executive lounges including a Servisair Lounge and Aviance Lounge.
The facilities offered by these lounges on payment of a single charge
include complimentary beverages and light snacks, a selection of
newspapers and magazines, television, phone, fax, email and internet
access. In addition, Business Booths (private workstations providing
access to power points, telephone, fax and modem) are available
in the Departure lounge of Terminal 1 and UK Explorer Pay as You
Go Internet booths are located in both Terminals.
For busy executives planning an overnight stay at Birmingham, the
3 star Novotel Birmingham Airport hotel is located on the airport
complex opposite Terminal 1. With 195 comfortable and spacious rooms,
gym and leisure facilities and swimming pool it is the perfect place
to relax and unwind. Other hotels nearby include the 3 star Holiday
Inn Birmingham airport hotel, the 3 star Birmingham Arden Hotel
and the 794 bedroom 4 star Hilton Birmingham Metropole a mile from
the airport. |
