Glasgow Airport
It is now recognised that Glasgow Airport had its origins as far back
as 1913. Between the wars it was used as a training airfield, but
with the intervention of WWII, the airport developed into a major
delivery point for American aircraft, up to 300 a day, provided under
the Lend Lease programme.
Work started on building Glasgow Airport in 1960 after it was announced
that Abbotsinch, initially an overspill for the RAF base at Renfrew
(and later known as HMS Sanderling when it was taken over by the Royal
Navy in 1943), would replace Renfrew as a new airport for Glasgow.
It was opened in May 1966 and by December had already recorded 1 million
customers. The runway was extended in 1973 and, following the purchase
of the airport by BAA in 1975, the terminal was extended in 1986.
More work was undertaken in the late eighties that included increasing
the terminal size by 70% to cater for 6 million customers annually.
In 1990 Prestwick Airport lost its monopoly on transatlantic flights
and more building work was undertaken to allow Glasgow Airport to
handle the resulting extra traffic. Today, Glasgow is the busiest
of the 3 main international airports in Scotland handling over 8 million
passengers a year.
Business Facilities
An area providing workspaces with payphone, payfax and modem facilities
is located on the first floor concourse close to Gate 1. There is
also the Glasgow Airport Business Centre, which provides meeting rooms,
conference and training facilities, an IT suite and full secretarial
support. A business lounge is situated before Security where, for
a single payment, visitors can use the tranquil environment to prepare
for that all important business meeting or simply relax with complimentary
drinks, snacks, newspapers and magazines. Credit telephone and fax
facilities (outgoing only) are also available.
If an overnight stay is required, the 3 star Express by Holiday Inn
Glasgow Airport Hotel is just 2 minutes walk from Glasgow Airport
Terminal by covered walkway and the brand new 4 star Ramada Glasgow
Airport hotel is only 500 yards away and offers a free bus service
to and from the airport. The Normandy Hotel, Dean Park Hotel and Beardmore
Conference Hotel are all within 3 miles of airport.
