Humberside Airport
The airport was built on the site of RAF Kirmington, home to RAF 166 squadron during the Second World War and opened in 1974 as Kirmington Airport but was swiftly renamed Humberside Airport when the county of Humberside was formed. In this year some 6,000 passengers used the airport, a figure which had increased to over 100,000 by 1986 when the new West apron was opened.
In 1992 an extension to the runway was completed together with passenger handling and terminal improvements; passenger figures rose to 450,000 per year. A new fire station, restaurant, bar and an extended arrivals hall were all built in 1995 followed in 1996 by a purpose built heliport and apron for Bond Helicopters. There then followed a major extension to the departure hall together with many other improvements and refurbishments.
In 2002 Humberside Airport welcomed the 5 millionth passenger to use the airport since records began in 1974 and in April 2003 the airport completed its most successful year to date breaking the 500,000 annual passenger milestone.
Business Facilities
The Servisair Executive Lounge offers visitors access to TV, magazines, newspapers, bar, complimentary drinks, snacks, telephone and fax facilities. Also at Humberside Airport is the Kirmington Suite, a fully equipped facility which may be hired for meetings, training courses etc.
If an overnight stay is required, there are a number of hotels in the surrounding areas of Grimsby, Hull and Scunthorpe from the elegant Oaklands Country House Hotel set in five acres of parkland to the modern 3 star St James' Hotel.
